Olha Kharlan children-Ukrainian sabre fencer, Olha Hennadiivna Kharlan was born on September 4, 1990.

Kharlan was born in Mykolaiv, Ukrainian SSR, Soviet Union. Her father taught her to swim when she was just a baby because he was a sailing and swimming coach. He also worked odd jobs as a cab driver and a construction worker. Her mother was a plasterer and painter.

Samba, cha-cha, and ballroom dancing were Kharlan’s first loves, but her parents couldn’t afford the lessons.

She chose the sabre as her weapon after a year of training after her godfather, sabre teacher Anatoly Shlikar, advised she take up fencing when she was 10 years old.

She used someone else’s shoes, sabre, and fencing outfit for her first two years of fencing because she couldn’t afford to buy her own.

She was trained by Artem Skorokhod, who is still her trainer as of 2014. When she was just 13 years old, she defeated adolescents five years older than her to win the national Junior title. Kharlan received his education at Mykolaiv’s Admiral Makarov National University of Shipbuilding.

Olha Kharlan career

Kharlan has also won two team world sabre championships, six individual European titles, and two team titles.

She has competed in the Olympics four times total, winning the team gold in 2008, the team silver in 2016, and the individual bronze twice.

Kharlan took part in the Olympics in 2008 in Beijing, 2012 in London, 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, and 2020 in Tokyo.

Kharlan was admitted into the International Fencing Federation’s (Fédération Internationale d’Escrime; FIE) hall of fame and was voted athlete of the year at the 2009 Ukrainian Heroes of Sports Year awards. She briefly considered a career in politics.

Kharlan defeated Russian Anna Smirnova 15-7 while competing at the 2023 World Fencing Championships in Milan, Italy, on July 27, 2023, a crucial ranking competition for Olympic qualifying.

Kharlan offered Smirnova a chance to tap blades after the Russian was defeated, and Smirnova extended her hand.

Kharlan claimed that while realizing the continuing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, she chose to salute in a way that showed respect for her rival.

Kharlan was subsequently black-carded and ousted from the tournament by FIE officials following a protracted wait in which Smirnova protested, sat on the strip for 45 minutes, and refused to move. The delegation from Ukraine appealed.

Kharlan was subsequently given automatic qualification by the IOC for the 2024 Summer Olympics.

Additionally, the FIE regretfully changed its mind about disqualifying her from the competition after speaking with the IOC, allowing her to compete in the team world championships.
